Description
Jazz icon Thelonious Monk first recorded as a leader for Blue Note in 1947, beginning a five-year run of sessions produced by Alfred Lion that documented the emergence of his singular musical voice. Recorded across a range of small-group settings, these performances capture Monk at his most inventive, reshaping harmony, rhythm and melodic form with a style that stood apart from anything else in jazz at the time.
Originally issued in 1956, Genius of Modern Music, Vol. 2 brought together key recordings from this formative period, presenting some of Monk’s most enduring compositions, including ‘Straight No Chaser’, ‘Four In One’ and ‘Monk’s Mood’. Together, the collection stands as a vital document of a visionary artist laying the foundations for modern jazz.
