Description
Matt Carmichael grew up near Inverness and his saxophone writing has always borrowed from the Highland landscapes and a rich history of Scottish folk. His fourth album is a quieter turn, written while he supported a loved one through ongoing health challenges. Michelle Willis co-produced it and the songs lean toward the likes of Big Thief, Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake as much as jazz. 'Red Sky' opens with acoustic guitar and violin; 'Morning Geese' follows with gentle uplift and support playing from Fergus McCreadie, Charlie Stewart and Tom Gibbs fill out tender, uncertain and melodic cuts that follow. An emotionally involving listen full of narrative.
