Having first worked with Blue Note in the 1940s as both a recording artist and talent scout, Quebec’s career was interrupted by personal struggles before he was reintroduced to listeners through a run of 45rpm singles in 1959. These sides revealed a saxophonist in peak form, his rich, unhurried tone perfectly suited to ballads, blues, and hard-swinging numbers alike.
The success of this series prompted Alfred Lion to organise further sessions, bringing Quebec into the studio with a revolving cast of musicians. The results capture a commanding voice in jazz history, balancing sensitivity with strength, and affirming Quebec’s lasting place in the Blue Note story.
