Tyrone Washington’s Natural Essence is a undersung gem of post-bop jazz. Released in 1968 on Blue Note, the debut by the young tenor saxophonist blends exploratory post-bop with groove-infused soul jazz and avant-garde intensity, revealing influences from the likes of John Coltrane while forging his own voice.
