American poet and activist, spoken word artist and singer Aja Monet has carved out a space between those worlds, rich in political expression, and transforming spoken word into something fluid and musical. She emerged from New York's Lower East Side scene as the youngest winner of the Nuyorican Grand Slam title and has since evolved into a compelling bandleader and recording artist whose work blends improvisation, blues and experimental sound with themes of resistance, love and collective memory. Her Grammy-nominated debut album showcased that approach beautifully, while this sophomore album deepens that further.
