Description
First issued in 1954 as The Consummate Artistry of Ben Webster on Norgran, and retitled three years later as King of the Tenors for Verve, this album captures Ben Webster at his most authoritative. Backed throughout by the Oscar Peterson Trio, with appearances from Benny Carter and Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison, Webster moves gracefully between tender ballads like ‘Tenderly’ and swinging numbers such as Duke Ellington’s ‘Cottontail’.
A superb introduction to his artistry, the record demonstrates why Webster is celebrated as one of jazz’s most distinctive and soulful tenor players.
