Description
Six years after his celebrated Village Vanguard recordings, Bill Evans returned to the Manhattan club in 1967 for two nights with bassist Eddie Gómez and drummer Philly Joe Jones. Released posthumously as California Here I Come in 1982, the recordings capture the trio in energetic form, with lively interplay and a strong rhythmic pulse. Their set draws on standards including ‘Round Midnight’, ‘In a Sentimental Mood’ and ‘Stella by Starlight’, alongside the Bacharach/David composition ‘Alfie’.
