ATA Records present A Portal to Here, a focused and deeply felt statement from Work Money Death that extends their engagement with Spiritual Jazz and the legacy of the 1960s New Thing, drawing clear lineage from the worlds shaped by Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders.
The album reflects a period of transition for the band and the studio, carrying a quiet sense of passage and dedication. Across four expansive pieces, the music moves with patience and purpose, balancing devotional calm with surging intensity. Core members Tony Burkill, Neil Innes, Sam Hobbs, and Sam Bell are joined by Johnny Richards of Sorcerers, whose piano playing brings a distinct voice informed by jazz history while remaining firmly rooted in the present.
Additional contributions from Alice Roberts (harp), Ben Powling (baritone saxophone), Richard Ormrod (woodwind), and Kev Holbrough & Steve Parry (brass) broaden the palette, with horn arrangements that periodically open the music into radiant, Sun Ra–tinged uplift.
