Wagram's Rare Groove Collection walks all the world's world music territories, or at least has done for several years now. Here the focus narrows to Ethiopia for its rare groove sources; this is a 20-track, double-vinyl survey of Addis Ababa's 60s and 70s golden period, when the Amha and Philips Ethiopia labels were pressing a sound between ethiojazz, funk-adjacent arrangements, and brass-heavy soul, unlike anything else on the continent. Mulatu Astatke appears twice, including 'Yegelle Tezeta', while Mahmoud Ahmed bookends both discs; Getatchew Mekurya, Alemayehu Eshete, Tlahoun Gessesse, Girma Beyene with Akale Wube are all further names Ethiopiques devotees will clock immediately.
