Description
Penguin Cafe return to The Red Book with an expanded edition of the 2014 album, originally released through Erased Tapes. Alongside the original tracklist, this reissue adds the previously CD and digital-only ‘And Yet…’ plus two tracks from the Umbrella EP, offering a fuller picture of the group’s richly detailed sound world.
Founded by Arthur Jeffes in 2009, Penguin Cafe began as a way of celebrating and continuing the legacy of Simon Jeffes and the much-loved Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Over time, the project developed its own identity, combining chamber music, folk influences and understated experimentalism into something both warm and elusive.
The Red Book explores contrasts between the pastoral and the abstract, moving from the drifting ambience of ‘Aurora’ and ‘1420’ to the more rhythmic, folk-inspired feel of ‘Odeon’ and ‘Radio Bemba’. Updated artwork by Studio Torsten Posselt incorporates an original drawing by sculptor Emily Young, tying this new edition back to the album’s original creative circle.
