This collection brings together essential recordings by Doug Carn, drawn from his work for Black Jazz Records during the 1970s. Often cited as one of the most vital yet under-acknowledged figures in spiritual jazz, Carn’s music blends emotive intensity, consciously uplifting themes and striking melodic clarity.
Across albums such as Infant Eyes, Adam’s Apple, Spirit of the New Land and Revelation, Carn helped shape a sound that has since become canonical. Central to many of these recordings is the remarkable five-octave vocal range of Jean Carn, whose performances add a powerful emotional dimension.
The sessions also feature a formidable cast of musicians including Alphonse Mouzon, Charles Tolliver, Henry Franklin, Michael Carvin, Walter Booker and Ronnie Laws. Alongside Carn’s own compositions, the collection includes distinctive interpretations of works by Lee Morgan, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Hutcherson and Wayne Shorter.
Black Jazz stood alongside labels such as Strata-East and Tribe Records as a cornerstone of independent, socially conscious jazz. This release forms part of a wider exploration of the label’s legacy from Soul Jazz Records.
