Federal Records was Jamaica’s first domestic recording studio, founded by Ken Khouri in 1961 at 220 Foreshore Road, Kingston. Built with engineer Graeme Goodall, the studio housed a pressing plant and cutting room, becoming the birthplace of ska and much of the island’s future music. Before building their own facilities, producers such as Sir Coxsone Dodd and Duke Reid brought the island’s finest musicians to Federal, capturing the sharp, upbeat sound that transformed American R&B into something uniquely Jamaican. In 1981, Khouri sold the studio to Bob Marley, who renamed it Tuff Gong, securing its legendary status.
This compilation gathers some of the finest ska tracks from the Federal vaults, spotlighting both celebrated and overlooked artists of the early 1960s. It features titans like Lord Tanamo, Don Drummond, Rico Rodriguez, Roland Alphonso, and The Skatalites, alongside rarities from Ferdie Nelson, Bibby & The Astronauts, Jackie Opel, and others.
