Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express’ Reinforcements captures a refined turn from early jazz-rock towards a smoother, groove-led jazz-funk sound. Building on the direction of Straight Ahead, Auger leans into polished arrangements and mid-’70s soul influences, with hints of the era’s wider crossover appeal.
Vocalist Alex Ligertwood returns, bringing warmth and character, backed by a tight ensemble including Jack Mills, Lennox Langton, Dave Dowle and Clive Chaman. Together they shape a set that balances musicianship with an easy-flowing feel.
Highlights include the heavy funk of ‘Brain Damage’, the Latin-tinged drive of ‘Something Out of Nothing’, and the expansive ‘Future Pilot’. Elsewhere, ‘Big Yin’ pays tribute to former drummer Robbie McIntosh.
