Mentored by Tito Puente, Joseph ‘Candido’ Rodríguez made his debut for Joe Bataan’s short-lived Ghetto Records, serving up a vibrant mix of salsa, Latin jazz and sweet Latin soul. The label was founded by Bataan as a means of gaining independence and creative control after years of music-industry exploitation. Though Ghetto Records folded soon after its launch, its small catalogue captured a vital strand of New York Latin music. Now-Again brings Rodríguez’s album back into circulation with Bataan’s involvement.
