Description
Originally released in 1975 on the cult Three Blind Mice label, Orang-Utan by bassist and cellist Isao Suzuki is a landmark of Japanese jazz, now reissued worldwide by Le Tres Jazz Club. Blending free jazz and fusion with striking finesse, the album features an all-star lineup of saxophonist Kenji Mori channelling Dolphy's spirit, a young Kazumi Watanabe delivering dazzling guitar work, plus Samu Kawakami on bass and Shinji Mori on drums. Vocalist Mari Nakamoto shines on a haunting cover of Shirley Horn's 'Where Are You Going?' and from the funky opener 'Blue Road' to the adventurous title track, Orang-Utan remains as vital as ever for real jazz heads.
