Description
Manizeh Rimer, founder of London’s Love Supreme Projects, presents her debut album Mahku via LEITER. Co-produced with ganavya, the record is a bold entry in contemporary spiritual jazz, developed from Rimer’s long-standing chanting practice and her deep creative partnership with ganavya.
Recorded at the LEITER Funkhaus Studio in Berlin, the album features eight chants, including a reimagining of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Landslide’. Contributors include Grammy-nominated Jai Uttal, bassists Ben Hazleton and Doug Weiss, harpist Miriam Adefris, pianist Jay Verma, and Rimer’s teenage daughter Mahku Rimer, who appears on vocals and guitar.
Material ranges from a 3,000-year-old Zoroastrian prayer (‘Ashem Vohu’) to Sanskrit and Buddhist mantras (‘Asato Ma’, ‘Gate Gate Paragate’) and the devotional ‘Avan’s Sita Ram’, dedicated to Rimer’s late mother. Mahkumeans “eclipse” and is also the name of her grandmother.
Opening and closing with three generations of women, this is music as a far-reaching loop: lineage, loss, and love expressed as shared ritual and continuous time.
