Dexter Wansel's 1976 debut Life On Mars is a space-funk classic that fused jazz, soul and futuristic electronics. Inspired by David Bowie's 'Life on Mars?', Wansel used his ARP 2600 synthesiser to create a distinctive cosmic sound that would influence generations of musicians. A key figure in the Philadelphia soul scene, Wansel also worked with MFSB, Billy Paul, Teddy Pendergrass and The Jones Girls. The opening beat from 'Theme From The Planets' is widely regarded as an early hip-hop blueprint, while his music has been sampled by Kanye West, Drake, J. Cole and many others.
