Description
McCoy Tyner made his debut as a bandleader with Inception, recorded for Impulse! Records in January 1962 at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio. Joined by bassist Art Davis and drummer Elvin Jones — both collaborators from John Coltrane’s groups — Tyner leads a focused trio session shaped by close musical understanding.
The six-track set combines four Tyner compositions — ‘Inception’, ‘Sunset’, ‘Effendi’ and ‘Blues for Gwen’ — with interpretations of ‘There Is No Greater Love’ and ‘Speak Low’. The stripped-back trio format highlights Tyner’s distinctive voicings, pedal-point harmonies and rhythmic momentum, with Davis and Jones providing agile, responsive support.
Recorded during a period of expansion for Impulse! Records, Inception stands as a defining early statement from one of jazz’s most influential pianists.
