Benny Carter Meets Oscar Peteson

Oscar Peterson, in all the years of our recording association, has shared albums with practically every great musician and vocalist. He also played on most of my jam session albums when I owned Verve Records thirty years ago. His playing with Benny Carter was on that historic session with Jimmy Hodges and Charlie Parker and on another album again featuring Benny Carter. 

I ran into Benny Carter some years ago on a flight from Los Angeles to New York and, as usual, we spoke about music and musicians. In some way the conversation got around to Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson. "You know," said Benny, "I think that today Oscar has pushed the piano a little further past Art. I've heard him do things that I believe extended the frontiers of jazz piano." Naturally I suggested he record an album with Oscar and he readily agreed. The music business being what it is, with everyone travelling at different times to different places, it has taken me over two years to get them together for the project, but only three hours to record it. It's a thrill to hear one of the last of the great jazz giants playing with the vitality and attack of musicians a third of his age. The rhythm section consists of Martin Drew on drums, Dave Young, a new addition to Oscar Peterson's trio, on bass, Joe Pass on guitar, and of course the co-leader of the date, Oscar Peterson.
