‘as night falls / as day breaks’ is a two-sided vinyl release that brings together both chapters of Jerk’s narrative cycle, tracing a journey from dusk through to daylight. Pressed as a single gatefold LP, the record unfolds as a full emotional arc, with Side A soundtracking the night and Side B welcoming the day.
Side A, ‘as night falls’, explores the darker, more introspective corners of human nature. Built with longtime collaborator and drummer Martine Wade, the music drifts through late-night electro-jazz, midnight funk and forward-thinking fusion. Tracks move between ritualistic calm and restless energy, capturing moments of release, tension and reflection as the city winds down. It’s immersive, shadowed and deeply atmospheric.
Flipping the record reveals Side B, ‘as day breaks’, the daylight counterpart that turns towards warmth, clarity and presence. Across seven tracks, Jerk and Wade trace the small emotional shifts of a new day, from groggy re-entry to full awareness and motion. Funk-leaning grooves, electroacoustic jazz and melodic minimalism guide the journey, with singles ‘steppin out’, ‘wait’ and ‘alarmed’ forming its backbone. The side opens in a liminal space and gradually steps fully into the light.
Together, the two sides form a complete cycle. Neither fully night nor fully day, this LP captures the essence of Jerk’s work: thoughtful, soulful and quietly immersive music that rewards deep listening.
