Rival Consoles returns with Persona, an expressive album inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s classic film. The title reflects its central theme: the shifting boundaries between self-perception and how we are seen by others.
Recorded in his south-east London studio, Persona expands on Ryan Lee West’s distinctive approach, blending analogue synths, acoustic and electric instruments, and a shoegaze-like fascination with effects. The result is a record of striking contrasts: the fractured rhythms of ‘Unfolding’, the heavy drones of the title track, the thundering percussion of ‘Phantom Grip’, and the hushed atmospheres of ‘Dreamer’s Wake’, ‘Rest’ and ‘Untravel’. Tracks like ‘Be Kind’ reveal kinship with fellow Erased Tapes artist Nils Frahm, while ‘I Think So’ works like a sonic kaleidoscope, layering tones into dense collages. Closing track ‘Fragment’ strips things back to an innocent, ambient simplicity.
West describes his music as “songwriting with an electronic palette of sounds,” aiming to evoke unknown emotions and expand the listener’s sense of self. This philosophy, alongside an increasingly ambitious live audio-visual show, has established Rival Consoles as one of electronic music’s most distinctive voices.
