With John Coltrane's rhythm section of McCoy Tyner (piano), Reggie Workman (bass) and Elvin Jones (drums), this is ironically the first of Shorter's albums where he really steps out of Coltrane's shadow, with a diverse set of original tunes that showcase each band member while announcing his own unique vision.
