Recorded at Paris' Palais d'Orsay Hotel during the International Sound Festival and aired on the "Jazz Vivant" radio show, this performance highlights Waldron's revitalised artistry after years of personal struggle. Backed by Christian Vander on drums and Jean-Francois Catoire on bass, the trio delivers a riveting set that exemplifies their deep cohesion. The set opens with 'Rat Now', showcasing Waldron's signature style, with his left hand's rhythmic foundation contrasting against his right hand's sharp, controlled improvisations. Vander's dynamic drumming adds a free-flowing energy to the piece, evoking Monk's influence on Waldron. 'Champs Elysees' follows, blending bluesy melodies with intricate interplay from the trio, while 'Rock My Soul' races forward with vibrant exchanges, particularly between Waldron's forceful left hand and Vander's energetic percussion. The set closes with 'Mount Fujiyama', a serene yet deeply rooted composition inspired by Waldron's visit to Japan. Fellow Ellington sidemen Paul Gonsalves, Jimmy Woode, and Sam Woodyard are present, along with Raymond Fol at the piano. Terry was one of the most gifted trumpeters to grace the Ellington band and he blossoms when he has more opportunities to solo in a small group setting like this one. Gonsalves proves to be the perfect foil for Terry as they trade lines on several of the numbers. Unlike many dates led by Ellington veterans, this one doesn’t rely heavily on songs from the vast Ellington songbook; instead, Terry includes only ‘Satin Doll’, a Monk’s tune, one by Babs Gonzales and three of his own compositions, with ‘Serenade to a Bus Seat’ (a remake of his upbeat instrumental interpretation of the hectic life of a touring musician) proving to be the most memorable.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0887/6785/6975/files/Clark_Terry_and_his_Orchestra_featuring_Paul_Gonsalves_Sam_Records.png?v=1740581348
clark-terry-and-his-orchestra-featuring-paul-gonsalves-copy
Afternoon in Paris

This release presents the complete original 1956 LP Afternoon in Paris (Atlantic LP1267). With the trio performances sitting beside stark solo takes, the set offers a rare glimpse into how Monk continuously bent and reshaped his own material in real time. The solo reading of 'Round Midnight' feels especially uncanny, all suspended pauses, jagged clusters and strangely luminous melodic fragments, then the 'Hackensack/Epistrophy' medley lurches forward with crooked momentum and deadpan wit. Elsewhere, 'Portrait Of An Ermite (Reflections)' drifts into something almost weightless. More than a historical document, this feels like sitting inches away from Monk's thought process as it unfolds at the keyboard.
